Essex County Authorities Looking for Man Accused of Using Handgun on Newark NJ Street

Newark New Jersey Shooting SuspectNewark NJ law enforcement is trying to find a man who has been accused of using a handgun in a targeted shooting.

According to Newark New Jersey officials, the suspect committed the violent act on the night of July 12. The victim, a 30-year-old male who is from Newark NJ, was walking along the 300 block of North 7th Street in Newark NJ when the suspect approached him. The victim reportedly recognized the suspect and noticed that he was in possession of a firearm.

Authorities said that the suspect used the gun to shoot the victim. As a result of the shooting, the victim sustained significant physical injuries.

After the suspect fired at least one gunshot at the victim, he reportedly ran away and fled the scene on foot.

Someone dialed 911 and alerted the Newark Police Department to the shooting. Newark NJ cops were dispatched to the area and subsequently found the victim lying on the ground.

Emergency medical responders moved the victim to Clara Maas Medical Center so that doctors could treat him for his gunshot-related injuries. The victim was later listed in stable condition and then released from the hospital.

Newark NJ detectives are searching for the suspect. The victim was able to identify the shooter as a 21-year-old man from Newark, New Jersey.

If the suspect is apprehended, he could be subject to severe criminal penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(b), anyone who assaults another person while using a deadly weapon like a handgun or a knife can be charged with a third degree crime. A conviction for third degree unlawful possession of a weapon could result in a sentence of 3-5 years behind bars.
