Collecting Firearms in New Jersey

New Jersey has a plethora of laws that regulate the purchase and possession of firearms; however it does not expressly regulate the collecting of firearms among New Jersey residents. The U.S. Federal government allows individuals to apply to become licensed collectors, but New Jersey neither provides nor requires such a license.

If you are seeking to become a collector of rifles or shotguns in New Jersey, you must obtain a New Jersey Firearms Purchaser Identification Card. If you are the holder of a valid card, the state does not set a limit on the number of rifles or shotguns that you are legally permitted to possess. It does, however, limit the number of handguns that an individual can purchase within a given period. Specifically, you can only purchase one handgun with a 30-day period, and permits to purchase handguns are only valid for 90 days before they must be renewed. These permits may be renewed for an additional 90 days, but can only be valid for 180 days consecutively.

“Directly to or from any exhibition or display of firearms which is sponsored by any law enforcement agency, any rifle or pistol club, or any firearms collectors club, for the purpose of displaying the firearms to the public or to the members of the organization or club, provided, however, that not less than 30 days prior to the exhibition or display, notice of the exhibition or display shall be given to the Superintendent of the State Police by the sponsoring organization or club, and the sponsor has complied with such reasonable safety regulations as the superintendent may promulgate.”
